Who are these trips for?
If you think learning is fun, these trips are for you. People who travel with Bibliocarta are respectful and generous tourists. We love home-cooked meals and finding little bookstores. We believe that learning about the history and culture of a place enriches our experience of that place. We’re good listeners but we also laugh a lot too. This trip is for you if you want a holiday where you’re still using both your brain and your heart.
I’ve never travelled with a group before — will I like it?
The great thing about Bibliocarta is that people arrive with the shared values of learning and kindness. You will have read the same books as everyone else in the group, and it’s your host’s job to make sure that you have a great day every day. If you’re still worried about needing your own space, consider booking a solo room instead of a twin-share.
What is a travelling book club? How much am I going to have to read?
In the months leading up to the trip we will post you two books: one fiction and one non-fiction, selected by your host. These are the only two required readings for the trip. You’ll also receive a short list of recommended books, and one of the delights of these journeys is that travellers build an even bigger and better list once they’re together.
How big are the groups?
Different trips might have different group sizes, depending on the accommodation options and trip type. The trip page will clarify this. In general, most Bibliocarta trips will go ahead with 10 guests minimum and 16 guests maximum.
What’s the difference between the host and the local guide?
Our local guides have years (if not decades) of experience sharing their countries and cultures. They always speak fluent English as well as the language/s of their country, and many of them speak three or more languages. We work with our local guides to make sure our itineraries are up-to-date, with the best experiences and locations possible.
Your host is a fellow traveller, not a local. They are the team captain of the group and the leader of the book club. The reading list is curated by the host, and the itinerary will reflect the host’s interests and priorities.
Both your host and your local guide will be with you every day. They work together to make sure you don’t have to work at all.
Why are tips included in the price?
We believe that everyone deserves to be paid well and reliably for their work. Bibliocarta is an Australia-based company, and most of our travellers aren’t used to tipping but want to do the right thing.
The price of your journey includes two types of tips: a tipping kitty, and tip packets for the local guide and driver. The tipping kitty is managed by the local guide and it goes to the families who cook for us, the hot air balloon pilots, and everyone else on the road who we interact with in one-off experiences. The tip packets for your local guide and driver are much more significant. Usually these are calculated at around 10USD per person per day. It’s above industry standard because we only work with the best people, and the best people deserve good pay.
Most of our travellers are relieved to have the calculations taken care of for them.
What are my payment options?
You need to pay your non-refundable deposit in order to secure your place on the trip. Once the minimum threshold of ten travellers is reached, you will then receive an email with a link to the full payment portal. You may then choose to either pay the amount in full (by the specific due date of the trip) or schedule the payment plan we have provided of up to four instalments. Please read our Terms & Conditions for further details.
What happens if a trip gets cancelled?
There are different outcomes if Bibliocarta cancels the trip, if you cancel the trip, or if there is a force majeure event. Please read our Terms & Conditions for further details.
What kind of travel insurance do I need, and when do I need it?
We strongly recommend you take out comprehensive travel insurance as soon as you book your place, just in case you need to cancel. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory on all Bibliocarta trips and you will need to provide proof of coverage on or before the date of final payment. Please read our Terms & Conditions for further details.
What is a Certified Legend?
You may see this term in some of our communications. A Certified Legend is someone who has travelled with Bri Lee or Bibliocarta before. Certified Legends get early access to put deposits on trip and secure places. Why? Because they're guaranteed to be the type of kind nerds we love travelling with, and you will too.
I have a dietary requirement, can I still come?
We can certainly accommodate vegetarians, vegans, and people needing gluten free or similar dietary options. Please advise us at the time of booking if you have a dietary requirement. If you have severe allergies, please get in touch with us to discuss your needs. Some of our trips include home-cooked meals or rustic and authentic-style eating arrangements.
